Rarely does anyone guess the correct answer to the question "What is the biggest employee problem small business owners face?" Would you say salary issues, or keeping them off social media or their cell phones all day? You would be wrong

Today's Palm Beach County small business owners have a hard time finding enough qualified workers for their open positions. While you may know plenty of unemployed or under-employed people the problem is that many workers have been out of the work force for so long - or in the same job for so long - that their skills have atrophied.

But once a new employee is hired, the on-boarding process can spell success or failure of the new hire. As stated by SCORE mentor guest and HR guru Jim Peterson, a small business owner would be well served by explaining exactly "how we get things done around here". The culture of a small business is very personal to the owner - make sure the applicant understands the culture and the role they will play in that culture.

Another hint provided by this program's guests is a killer question that an employer should ask at the end of an interview, "What difficult question haven't I asked you?" Further, a small business owner must understand that employees are not their friends. They cannot fall victim to getting involved in an employee's personal life or sharing stories of their own personal life.
