This program is about nonprofit organizations in our community and the "Greater Good" that they do. Because America is the land of entrepreneurs who find opportunity at every turn, there is even a web site that promotes formation of a nonprofit to fix whatever problem, real or perceived, that you might think of.
Today's program features the Executive Director of the Palm Beach Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is a part of the National organization which exists to "find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients". Clearly this is a mission that is for the greater good of all people around the world because cancer does not discriminate among race, color, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation or any other segment of the population.
There are not yet means of preventing or even early detecting of blood cancers, so the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is focused on finding cures. The LLS drives research and helps to bridge the gap between academic discovery and drug development. They routinely identify and fund the most promising blood cancer research projects and forge partnerships with academic institutions, biotech and pharma companies to accelerate the development of new therapies.
The Palm Beach LLS is in a continuing fund raising mode because the need for research dollars far outstrips the available funds. The focus is now on their annual Man of the Year and Woman of the Year contests. Suzanne Holmes is a candidate for Woman of the Year 2017 and she is aggressively pursing bringing in the most money to benefit LLS so she can take that prize. Pamela Payne is the Executive Director of LLS and supporting all of the benefit candidates.
